Endless Wonder

and while the world
watched shadows
play out
in empty fields,
eyes flitting,
unaware,
between
the stolid black
and unreal lights
on misshapen forms,
you and me,
we sat still,
under the vastness
of the night sky
rolled out
for all to see,
our eyes lost
in the endless wonder
of distant stars
dotting
the virgin canopy.

Strangers and Friends

don't stand in my light,
stand in my shadow,
so we can see
and know each other,
not of the flesh,
but through the flesh,
when the masks are slipped
from our darkened faces,
you and me -
strangers without hesitation,
friends without compromise.

Down the Alley

every once in a while
I walk down that alley
where walls grow in
to touch each other,
where shadows lurk
without a form,
where there's no space
to walk for two;
yes, there are moonbeams
and foggy streetlights
down the block,
but here in the alley
there's only inky black
stitched into every crack
on the cold stone walls;
yes, every once in a while
I walk down that alley
where my body grows eyes,
and prickly spines
of wicked laughter
choke a heart
that bleeds red wine;
where the eerie claws
of deathly silence
dig into the hollows
as I grope,
and a heavy cloak
upon the chest
is where
a raucous breath is caught;
yes, there's a fire in that alley
that's been seething there for long,
there's hatred and there's kindness,
and lost souls waiting to be found;
there's sadness and misery,
and poverty of thoughts,
where shadows laugh together,
where there's adventure to go around;
so if some day you miss me,
you'll know just where to look,
I'll be there down in that alley,
where you don't really want to look.

The Cross

We all have to bear the cross.
Our own cross.
We all have to climb the mountain.
Our own mountain.
We all have to get crucified.
Our own crucifixion.

The cross we carry
is not the burden
of our bygone past,
but our shadow
that walks with us,
and holds the key
to unlocking
the light within,
to our very own
resurrection.

Walking with My Shadow

as I walk with my shadow,
pouring my heart
into everything
I see, hear, touch and feel,
I water little seeds of love
hidden in the earth,
growing into flowers
that I leave behind
for someone else
to pick up and hold;
as I walk with my shadow,
there's no turning back,
for my shadow lights up
the path for another,
as we all learn to walk
with our own shadow.

Shadow play

disoriented,
misty-eyed,
lost,
distraught -
shadow plays
of a tireless ego;
in the incessant play
of light and dark
is the source
of all that is -
the only GPS
that helps me
find my way home;
when I listen
to the silent whispers
of my heart,
I can sit back and watch
the shadows
come to life
and dance
with abandon,
scripting a new story
of light and dark.
